The gas station sat alone at the edge of the highway, its flickering neon sign humming against the late afternoon heat. Inside, the cool air smelled faintly of coffee, motor oil, and dust baked off the road. She stood near the counter in black running pants and a fitted black tank top, one hand resting on her hip as she studied a folded map of the national park. Her calves were lean and strong from miles of trail running, and a sheen of sweat still glimmered across her shoulders from the drive with the windows down. She added a bag of peppered beef jerky to the counter, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear while the cashier rang her up.

That was when she noticed him near the soda coolers. Tall and athletic. He moved with the relaxed rhythm of someone who loved his body and knew exactly how to use it. While waiting for his drink, he shifted into a playful little dance step to the song crackling through the station speakers, smooth enough to make her laugh before she could stop herself. He caught the sound, glanced over, and grinned, confident without trying too hard. They traded a few teasing comments about bad road food and hiking trails, and within minutes the conversation felt strangely effortless. Before leaving, he pointed toward the mountains visible beyond the highway. “There’s a trail sign just past the main overlook,” he said. “Meet me there at sunset?” She folded the map slowly, smiling as she slipped it under her arm. “Don’t make me wait too long,” she replied before heading back into the heat outside.
